Bioethics: Its European and Global Values and Methods

University of Helsinki - Bioethics: Its European and Global Values and Methods

European bioethics as an academic endeavour is worth globalising only if it is of exceptionally high quality or has a distinctive ethos. Quality depends on methods and their use. Ethos is reflected in the values and principles used in justifying decisions and practices.

What specific methods are used in academic European bioethics? Philosophical? Sociological? Quantitative? Qualitative? And what values and principles are used in the justification of decisions and practices? Helsinki will attend to these questions, surveying on how these reflect in the conclusions drawn and propositions made. The Helsinki RA will review articles published in Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy and prepare a systematic description of methods and values as they appear in this European journal. The results will be published on the project’s website.

How well are the methods used and how distinctively European are the values? In the Helsinki workshop, speakers are invited to analyse the nature and application of different methods and values in European bioethics; and to assess their potential for globalisation. The presentations will be podcast.
